ECU Health Comprehensive Sickle Cell Program – Sickle Cell Transition

Sickle Cell Disease is a life-long genetic disease, which means you will continue to need special medical care from an adult provider once you reach adulthood. The team at ECU Health Comprehensive Sickle Cell Program cares about you and will help you move smoothly from pediatric to adult health care.

We will work with you and your family to prepare for the change from a “pediatric” model of care (where families make most decisions) to an “adult” model of care (where you will make your own decisions). Many of our young adult patients choose to still involve their families in health care decisions. We will help you through this process by helping to find an adult provider, sending medical records and talking about your special needs with the adult provider. Your health matters to us and we will be with you for every step of this transition process.
