Children’s Oncology Group (COG)

The Children’s Oncology Group (COG) provides important information for children and their families from the time of diagnosis, through treatment and following cure. ECU Pediatric Hematology/Oncology is affiliated with this group. As members of the world’s largest organization devoted to childhood and adolescent cancer research, we provide our patients with the most up to date treatment protocols and access to phase two and three clinical trials.

Services

Diagnoses commonly seen:

  • Leukemia
  • Hodgkin Lymphoma
  • Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
  • Neuroblastoma
  • Wilm’s tumor
  • Hepatoblastoma
  • Ewing’s sarcoma
  • Osteosarcomas
  • Other soft tissue sarcomas
  • Brain tumors

Other conditions that are not classified as cancer but need transfusion services or chemotherapy:

  • Hemangiomas
  • Vascular Malformations
  • Enzyme replacements for Gaucher’s disease (a metabolic disorder)
  • Langerhan’s cell histiocytosis
  • Mastocytosis
  • Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome (APLS)
  • Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)

We offer the following clinics and services to our patients and their families:

  • Care for Children
  • Leukemia and Lymphoma
  • Solid Tumors
  • Bone Tumors
  • Brain Tumors
  • Care for children with hemangiomas and other vascular malformations
  • Care for children who are survivors of cancer.
  • Kids Immunosuppressed Specialty Unit (KISU), a special, six-bed unit for children with cancer and other illnesses that compromise their immune systems. The controlled environment allows children to move freely and enjoy time with others while undergoing extensive treatments and therapies.
  • Palliative care for patients not responding to treatment.
  • Rainbow Services, which provides education and emotional support for families of a child with cancer. Resources provided include life skills such as how to get insurance, as well as information on scholarships for cancer survivors.
  • Camp Rainbow, a weeklong summer camp for children with cancer, hemophilia and other chronic blood disorders and their siblings.
  • Coordination with Make-A-Wish, Dream Factory and Riley’s Army.
  • Ronald McDonald House, with two locations on campus, is available to all families with children treated here, whether a child is staying long term or just coming for a day treatment.
  • Pediatric Day Medical Ambulatory Unit, a 12-bed unit for children who are here for chemotherapy, sedation, portable dialysis, medication therapy, transfusions, patient testing, minor non-surgical procedures and observation.
