Pathology – Medical Examiner and Autopsy Services
The Division of Autopsy and Forensic Services serves as the Regional Autopsy Center for 23 counties in the northeastern part of the state for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. We provide autopsy and consultation services to local medical examiners and law enforcement throughout the eastern counties of North Carolina. Our specialty-trained physicians are board certified in anatomic, clinical and forensic pathology. Our highly skilled physicians are trained in investigation, analysis and evaluation of a wide variety of natural and non-natural deaths. They frequently provide court testimony in criminal trials. Our experienced medical examiner’s death investigators are certified by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigation (ABMDI).
When a loved one dies in or out of the hospital, family members may want to know more about their cause of death. Our office provides autopsy services to regional hospitals, attorneys and insurance investigators. We provide medical consultation services to attorneys and may serve as an expert witness in medicolegal cases.
Our office performs more than 600 autopsies each year. Our faculty and staff members have additional training in cardiac pathology, neuropathology and forensic anthropology. The investigative and review procedures we perform satisfy the requirements for Par IV of the Maintenance of Certification for the American Board of Pathology.
