Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN) – Menopause
Menopause refers to the time, usually in your 40s and 50s, when hormone levels change as a normal part of aging. Eventually your periods stop altogether and you are no longer able to become pregnant.
Perimenopause describes the transition that starts before menopause. These changes may include irregular periods, mood changes and even difficulty remembering words. Other women feel greater energy, while some women may not notice any differences.
Our providers will check your general health and talk over any concerns you have. We will also address any problems such as heavy bleeding or bleeding after menopause. We can recommend nutritional changes, medications or supplements during menopause.
While menopause usually ends by your early- to mid-50s, the hormonal changes may begin years earlier. You may experience irregular periods and changes in blood flow leading up to true menopause. Women are able to become pregnant until menopause has ended.
During perimenopause and menopause you may experience:
- hot flashes or chills
- moodiness, sadness, fatigue
- difficulty concentrating or remembering words
- irregular periods
- brittle nails, hair loss
- changes in sex drive
Hormone therapy may help with some symptoms, but there may be health risks. Some women find relief with herbal, vitamin and nutritional supplements. We can discuss these options during your appointment.
Weakening, or thinning, of the bones, known as osteoporosis, may occur during and after menopause. It’s important to monitor the density, or thickness, of your bones when you begin to have menopause symptoms.
