Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN) – Pregnancy & Birth

When you are ready to start a family, we’ll be with you every step of the way. We’ll recommend a healthy diet and possibly nutritional supplements. After conception, we’ll be there to guide you through your first, second and third trimesters and the changes they bring.

We offer ultrasound and other exams to monitor the health of your developing baby. These procedures will help us check on the growth, size and heartbeat as well as discover potential concerns. The ultrasound may allow us to determine the baby’s gender.

Our department offers routine and targeted ultrasounds; specialized genetic ultrasound exams; advanced diagnostic tests such as amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, periumbilical blood sampling, fetal nuchal translucency screening and fetal therapy procedures.

We will diagnose problems in the uterus that may affect your pregnancy. We can often diagnose problems with the heart or other organs that can help us provide the best treatments at birth. For women with complications during pregnancy, we offer services at our Regional Perinatal Center. This center offers exceptional care for women who are experiencing a high-risk pregnancy. Some causes of high-risk pregnancies include high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, kidney problems or cancer. If you are older than 35 and pregnant, you may also be placed under the care of our maternal-fetal medicine specialists at the Regional Perinatal Center.

For your birth and delivery, our physicians will take care of you at ECU Health Medical Center’s Women’s Hospital. You may wish to have a traditional obstetrician, or you may prefer a nurse midwife with you during birth.

Our neonatal specialists are always close by if your newborn requires the care of our state-of-the art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU.
